Campership

High Meadows Camp is able to offer a limited amount of camperships for qualified children through three programs. Award candidates must complete a campership application and provide additional information to show their need and interest for receipt of free or reduced camp tuition, including proof of income (most recent tax return), and any other supporting documentation (letters of support from teachers, counselors, agencies, etc.). Fund recipients are expected to comply with all standard policies and procedures of the camp program, including paperwork deadlines and attendance expectations. All applications are considered by a committee and awards are made through its recommendation by April 15th or until funds are depleted. We regret that we cannot meet the needs of everyone who applies.

The Jack Gilliom Campership Fund

This fund was established by the family and friends of Jack Gilliom (1973-1999), a former camper who died in an avalanche while skiing in Montana. It is awarded to campers of Hispanic background. The Gillioms have expressed a sincere interest in meeting the campers who will benefit from the Jack Gilliom Campership.

During most summers of his growing-up years, Jack Gilliom could be found in the fields and woods of High Meadows. During camp, Jack was usually surrounded by the sound of laughter. He told jokes and funny stories and slipped into made-up personalities, like an Austrian body-builder, or a member of the world champion Long-Distance Spitting Team. He was also known at camp for his skills as a soccer -player, usually playing goalie. Jack loved the natural world, and when he became a counselor, Jack taught others to treat the environment with care and respect. High Meadows was a very important part of Jack’s life, and through this campership, he shares it with a new generation of campers.

The June Hinerfeld Restler Campership Fund

This fund was established by the children and grandchildren of June (1941-2017). June was a lifelong artist who began her career as an elementary public school teacher in Spanish Harlem New York during the early 1960’s. It was during this time she established her interest in educating, caring for and supporting children of diverse backgrounds.

Upon moving from New York to Roswell in the early 1970s she was fortunate to have found High Meadows which aligned with her sensibilities and ideas about education. She joined as an elementary teacher where she met lifelong friends and created special memories that continued to impact her for the remainder of her life. She found the school and camp to be a special place that fostered and nurtured the possibilities within every child. Her sons became campers during those early years and she continued supporting the mission.

Eventually her three granddaughters began attending camp each summer and she relished in hearing about the adventures they had each day. June would be honored to know that a child who may not otherwise be able to attend High Meadows will have the opportunity to learn, develop, grow and make lifelong memories through this fund.

The High Meadows Campership Fund

This program is funded by contributions made by members of the High Meadows community and other philanthropic sources. Awards are based on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, financial need, relationship to High Meadows, and potential benefit to campers.
